At our Harley Street Clinic we pride ourselves on the extensive range of options that we can offer our patients, who may be interested in laser skin tightening or laser skin resurfacing.
Dr Haus in particular has extensive experience in the use of lasers in Dermatology. The wide variety of lasers he has incorporated into his clinic, is because of his strong belief in the role that laser therapy can play in achieving and maintaining healthy skin tissue.
What Skin Conditions Can Lasers Be Used to Treat?
Lasers have been used to treat skin conditions for more than 40 years.
Initially lasers were used primarily to treat vascular birthmarks such as port wine stains. However significant advances in the past 20 years, has seen lasers now being used to treat skin conditions other than what we would call congenital defects. Lasers have become a versatile treatment option for the management of many skin concerns.
Lasers can now be used to treat non-malignant pigmented lesions such as freckles and birthmarks, to remove tattoos, to improve scars and remove sun-spots.
Laser therapy is also used in the treatment of conditions such acne, melasma, rosacea and vitiligo, to name but a few.
Skin showing signs of premature ageing as a result of sun damage (a condition known as photoaging) can now be tightened and fine lines and wrinkles can be improved, with laser treatment.
Lasers are also popular for removing unwanted face and body hair.
How Do Laser Skin Treatments Work?
The word ‘LASER’ stands for ‘light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation’. This tells us that lasers work by delivering a controlled wavelength of light, to heat up target structures (such as a sun spot), but not damage the surrounding tissue. The heat and light from the laser will activate a healing process that will eventually lead to the growth of new collagen in the skin.
There are two main types of lasers which Dr Haus uses in his clinic:
Ablative laser treatments make microscopic holes in the dermis, or outer layer of your skin, so they can target damaged cells deep in your dermal layer. An ablative laser treatment will involve a longer healing period but will produce superior and longer lasting results. This treatment is used for deep acne scars, stretch marks and can be very effective in improving sagging skin on the face and neck.
Non-ablative lasers work by creating heat in the skin without injuring the surface. They are unable to penetrate as deeply as ablative lasers, but are still an effective treatment for rosacea, broken blood vessels, fine wrinkles on the face, cleavage and neckline as well as the back of the hands. A non-ablative laser will often be used by Dr Haus or his colleagues in combination with another treatment in order to treat different skin complaints in the one appointment.
Latest Developments in Laser Technology – Body Skin Tightening
Whereas traditionally lasers have been used to tighten skin on the face, recent developments have seen lasers being treated to tighten loose skin on the body. Laser skin tightening is popular for improving loose skin on the stomach, buttocks and legs.
Dr Haus has many years of experience in using lasers for skin tightening and rejuvenation. He also worked with some of the companies who manufacture the lasers that he uses in his clinic, in order to contribute to the development of their treatment protocols.
