Acne Scar Treatment

Acne Scar Treatment London

Some acne spots or ‘lesions’ can heal without any damage to the skin’s surface, but large or deeper acne lesions will often leave a visible scar long after the underlying acne inflammation has gone.

Types of Acne Scars

Dermatologists classify the different types of acne scars according to their shape, depth and colour.

  • Box car scars – these occur at shallow to medium depths and have well-defined edges.  They are most commonly found on the cheeks and temples.
  • Ice pick scars – as the name suggests, these are long and narrow in shape and penetrate deeply into the skin.
  • Rolling, atrophic and depressed scars – best described as a landscape of undulations and depressions on the skin, with some spots anchored to deeper structures in the skin.
  • Mixed scars – this is the most common pattern of acne marks – most patients will have a combination of all of the above.
  • Red scars – these areas commonly appear on the cheeks or forehead and are a result of early acne scarring.
  • Hypertrophic and keloid scars – lumpy red scars most commonly seen around the jawline, neck, back and chest areas.

How Do We Remove Acne Scars?

Complete acne scar removal is often difficult, but there are still many treatment options available to improve their appearance.  All patients must first have a consultation with a Dermatologist to ensure that there is no ongoing active acne or other skin issue to be addressed.  Then just like how the acne that caused the scar would be treated, our Dermatologist will then propose a treatment plan in order to get the best improvement in the skin for the individual patient.

At our clinic on London’s Harley Street, we have years of experience in treating acne scars, in men, women and people of all skin colours.

Laser Treatment for Acne Scars

We believe that the best acne scar treatments will typically involve the use of lasers and ablative radiofrequency, however the exact treatment will be agreed with the patient following a consultation and an examination of their skin. Laser scar removal usually involves a course of treatment but in our experience does consistently provide good results.
