Having your moles professionally checked by a Dermatologist is an important first step for anyone who is concerned about skin cancer.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.K. It is caused by sunburn, sunbeds and unprotected UV exposure. People with freckles or moles are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer.
Skin Cancer broadly falls into two main categories, Melanoma Skin Cancer and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer.
Melanoma Skin Cancer is by far the most serious and according to Cancer Research U.K. approximately 16,000 people are diagnosed with this disease each year in the U.K.
The most common sign of melanoma is the appearance of a new mole or changes in the shape, size or colour of an existing mole. If this happens, it is important to have your skin checked by a Dermatologist as soon as possible.
In addition to Melanoma Skin Cancer, our Dermatologists are also experienced at diagnosing and treating Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers. These include Basel Cell Skin Cancer, Squamous Cell Skin Cancer and others that are less common.
Our Clinic offers the following services:
A mole check consists of an initial consultation with a Dermatologist where they will carry out an in depth examination of any moles on your face and body.
If there are any moles that the Dermatologist is concerned about they will use a high powered skin surface microscope known as a dermatoscope. The dermatoscope is a diagnostic tool for early screening for skin cancer. It is used to check for signs of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer.
It can also help to identify patients who will require further monitoring with mole mapping technology.
Mole Mapping technology is used to create a comprehensive ‘mole map’ of your entire body. It is extremely helpful when a patient has a single mole or multiple moles which need to be monitored over time. This highly sensitive technology allows us to see the smallest of changes that are happening to a mole.
If following the visual checks and dermoscopy the Dermatologist considers it necessary to remove your mole then they will be able do this.
Once removed the tissue will be sent to an outside pathology laboratory for histology analysis. This is to check whether the mole is cancerous or not. The results will usually be available within 72 hours and we will then contact you to discuss them.
Every mole check is carried out by a Dermatologist and you will be provided with a full report on the findings. We will also provide recommendations for any further treatment.
The Dermatologists at Dr Haus Dermatology are all experienced at diagnosing and treating patients with all types of skin cancer.
While many skin moles will be benign or harmless, there are some that will need immediate treatment or close monitoring in the form of mole mapping.
If you would like to know more about our mole checks or mapping technology then please contact us. We will be happy to talk you through your options.

I was recommended to see Dr Haus in July 2015 by a friend. She knew I had seen a few other doctors in Brazil where I am from about a skin allergy which still persisted for nearly two years. The allergy was getting more intense and because it started to affect my sleep I decided to see Dr Haus. The clinic is very well located in Harley Street and the staff were ever so friendly. I felt very comfortable discussing my skin issue with him as he explained about its possible causes and what we could do in order to get better. The consultation room was so welcoming and beautifully decorated which makes you feel good about being there. He prescribed a cream and some other medicine to be taken for a month. He also suggested a special soap for me to wash my body with which I still use to this day. I am grateful to him because my body feels fine; my skin is in good condition and I started sleeping well again. If I ever need another dermatologist who I know will listen and explain to me about my skin condition in terms that I can understand while taking a good care of me I would go back to see Dr. Haus. Thank you very much for your attention Dr Haus.
