Acne at any time in your life can affect your confidence. Many people will experience acne for the first time during puberty, and for the lucky few, that may be the end of it.
However acne in adults is surprisingly common and some people may experience acne for the first time when they are in their 30’s, 40’s or 50’s. This is called adult-onset acne.
More than 80% of adult acne occurs in women and can be associated with changes in hormone levels around the time of periods, pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills. Acne on the chin and lower face is particularly associated with hormones.
Another time when our body produces a type of hormone that activates the skin’s oil glands and hair follicles which can cause acne, is when we are stressed. At our clinic we often see acne flare ups in patients who are experiencing some form of unusual or excessive stress in their lives.
Other triggers for adult acne could be as a result of changing or inappropriate skincare products or taking certain medications including vitamin supplements.
Dr Haus believe that it is important to treat acne, and not to leave it. In addition to improving one’s self-esteem, actively treating acne will also minimise the chances of scarring and dark spots on the skin developing at a later stage. There are a range of treatment options now available for treating acne and some will provide quick results, but others may require a longer term approach.
Some acne lesions can heal without any damage to the skin’s surface, but large or deeper acne lesions will often leave a visible scar long after the underlying acne inflammation has gone. The scars may be like small holes, or depressions in the skin, or else they may be raised above the surface of the skin.
There are many options available to dermatologists to improve the appearance of acne scars. Just like how the acne that caused the scars is usually treated, Dr Haus will often propose a plan that incorporates more than one type of treatment in order to get the best results with acne scars.
Treatments for acne and acne scars, are suitable for both men and women.
I’ve been with the Dr. Haus for nearly five months, doing my treatment for acne, and the result was wonderful. My acne problems that I’ve had for over thirteen years has been resolved. Great professionalism of Dr. Haus; excellent customer service; a well-equipped clinic and a pleasant environment. Definitely a great dermatology clinic in London.
As a model it is really important for me to look after my skin. Recently I came out in a small case of acne and have been trying desperately to find the right products to help clear this up. A friend recommended me and it was honestly the best thing I could have done. My skin feels so fresh and I am really happy with the results. I would highly recommend to anyone!
