Cellulite is surprisingly common, found in around 90% of women and 10% of men.
A build-up of cellulite as we age is caused by poor circulation and lack of oxygen in the area where cellulite becomes visible.
Cellulite is the result of the swelling of fat storage cells called adipocytes. Adipocytes can swell up to 60 times’ their initial volume. When these cells become saturated they can then activate additional storage cells which can also swell up. To accommodate the increased size of the fat storage cells, the skin stretches and the surface then becomes dimpled.
Unfortunately cellulite cannot be permanently removed but it is possible to significantly improve the appearance of the dimpled skin, with highly effective non-invasive treatments such as VelaShape and Emtone.
