One of the most common reasons patients visit our dermatology clinic is for skin pigmentation treatment in London. Skin pigmentation is a darkening of the skin from its regular baseline colour, from whatever cause.
It can occur in people of different skin colour, skin type and skin texture, as well as different skin tones and ages.
Skin pigmentation may be the result of a skin injury, sun exposure, acne scarring, hormonal changes or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It may appear as age spots, freckles, melasma or liver spots. Or it may be darker patches on the skin or uneven skin tone.

Hyperpigmentation or skin pigmentation refers to a darkening of the skin from its regular baseline colour, from whatever cause. It may occur in the form of diffuse, generalised skin darkening or localised spots or patches on the skin.
You could say a sun tan is a type of generalised hyperpigmentation, caused by sun exposure. The same mechanism involved in producing that very welcome change of colour is also involved in the excess production of unwanted localised pigmentation (blemishes, freckles and other skin imperfections).
While most of these do not pose any serious medical threat, skin pigmentation can cause anxiety, and can be upsetting from a psychological point of view.
In essence, the sun, along with some other predisposing factors. Melanin is the skin’s pigment (brown in colour), which is normally produced in response to the sun (UV light) to protect against sun damage.
In the case of hyperpigmentation, melanin production goes into overdrive and is deposited irregularly in the skin, giving the appearance of brown patches of skin or dark spots.
This melanin over-production can be triggered by existing sun damage, acne or other skin scarring, or skin inflammation carried over from a past flare-up of eczema or psoriasis (also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
Melasma is a particular category of hyperpigmentation that is linked to hormonal fluctuation. It is relatively common and affects mainly women, especially during pregnancy. Melasma typically presents on the forehead, nose, cheeks, chin and upper lip.
Skin pigmentation can also take the form of freckles, dark marks, age spots, acne scars, and darker skin small patches or larger patches.
To protect the skin, one of the recommendations made by most dermatologists would be to apply daily, broad-spectrum sun protection (sunscreen of SPF50) on all affected areas.
Topical and/or oral treatments, such as Cysteamine, Azaelic Acid, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) and Tranexamic Acid may also be prescribed to treat pigmentation on face.
While these are all good options for treatment, for many patients the best treatment will often be our hyperpigmentation laser treatment. Laser for hyperpigmentation is extremely effective to improve unwanted facial pigmentation.
At Dr Haus Dermatology we are highly experienced in performing laser treatment for a variety of different skin conditions, including for pigmentation removal. Laser pigmentation removal is a treatment that we carry out practically every day of the year in our Harley Street skin clinic.
Dr Haus Dermatology in Harley Street was the first practice in the UK to offer patients ‘elos’ technology, a state-of-the-art platform that delivers laser pigmentation treatment, along with light and radio frequencies, to treat hyperpigmentation.
In 2023 our clinic started to use the most advanced picosecond laser technology on the market. The PICO Laser London is the gold standard technology for improving pigmented skin conditions including the difficult to treat Melasma. Moreover the pico second laser used by Dr Haus Dermatology is safe to use on all skin types.
We also offer a full range of chemical peel for hyperpigmentation treatments, which all differ in their strength, peeling activity and downtime.
We have the professional expertise to treat all skin types and skin tones, including darker skin tones. Most skin pigmentation issues can be resolved effectively and our Dermatologists will help to devise a bespoke treatment plan.
