Lasers have been used to treat skin conditions for more than 40 years.
Initially lasers were used primarily to treat vascular birthmarks such as port wine stains. Further research over the past 20 years, has seen the application of lasers in Dermatology now being used to treat a number of skin conditions in addition to congenital defects.
Lasers can now be used to treat non-malignant pigmented lesions (freckles and birthmarks), tattoos, scars and wrinkles, acne, sun-spots and for hair removal. Lasers work by delivering a wavelength of light that heats up target structures such as a sun spot for example but does not damage the surrounding tissue.
There are two main types of lasers which Dr Haus uses for treatment in his clinic:
Ablative laser treatments make microscopic holes in the dermis or outer layer of your skin so they can target damaged cells deep in your dermal layer. An ablative laser treatment will involve a longer healing period but will produce superior and longer lasting results. This treatment is used for deep acne scars, stretch marks and can be very effective in improving sagging skin on the face and neck.
Non-ablative lasers work by creating heat in the skin without injuring the surface. They are unable to penetrate as deeply as ablative lasers but are still an effective treatment for rosacea, broken blood vessels, fine wrinkles on the face, cleavage and neckline as well as the back of the hands. A non-ablative laser will often be used in combination with another treatment to treat different skin complaints in the one appointment.
Whereas traditionally non-ablative lasers were limited to treating the outside surface of the skin, some of the latest lasers can be used inside the oral cavity. Dr Haus uses this innovative technology to deliver controlled and gentle heating inside the mouth to stimulate collagen contraction and new collagen fibres. This treatment is effective at addressing the deep nasolabial folds in the cheeks, which can get a plumping effect from the inside out.
Dr Haus has extensive experience in using Ablative and Non-ablative lasers for facial rejuvenation and has worked with manufacturers of some lasers to contribute to the development of their treatment protocols.
